There was the excited roar of the audience as Mia waited with her teammates patiently. She looked at the other two blonde gymnasts who were standing with her. All three of them wore matching warm up jackets. The leotards beneath the jackets were different though.
Music was playing through the audio system of the stadium as gymnasts made their entrance while their names were called out by the announcers. The air of excitement had already set in, it seemed. From the sound the crowd was making, it was safe to assume that the spectators were just as excited about the start of the competition as the actual contenders were, if not more. The contenders were all pumped up and ready to make their entrance and get started with the events they had been preparing for.
The men had all run out and made their entrances. Now, it was the women’s turn to go make their grand entrances. The names were called in order of their age, tiny tidbits about each gymnast being thrown in as they would run out and do a small routine as a form of introduction. It was like the tiny tasting spoon one would get at the ice cream shop to try a flavor of ice cream, only with gymnastics.
Two hands lightly gripped both of Mia’s tiny hands as she wondered who all that she had invited to attend the event was going to be seated in the crowd. The tiny blonde looked up at her two friends and smiled as she squeezed the two other women’s hands. ”Just like how we practiced, right?’
Nastia smiled and Shawn nodded as the trio laughed easily. It had been a while since the three had actually gotten to compete with each other. The song came through the speakers and the trio watched as the number of gymnasts dwindled down. Soon it was just them.
”And now, last but certainly not least, we have our terrific trio! The dream team from 2008! Welcome back to the stadium, Shawn Johnson, Mia Dearden, and Nastia Liukin!”
The three blondes ran out in order as their names were announced. The music coming through the speakers was Die Young by Ke$ha. The only reason Mia knew that was because her gymnastics teammates had given her a crash course in the current trends and artists that were commonly on the radio. The beat fit as the women smiled and leapt into the air onto the stadium floor, which was set up for such feats as the one they were preforming.
The women tumbled in perfect sync with one another. Having been separated for a while did not seem to have had any effect on their ability to keep up with one another. Back tucks, handsprings, and flips were all preformed as if the blonde gymnasts were the same person instead of the unique individual gymnasts that they were.
When the three finally finished, they joined hands and beamed before going over to join the other gymnasts. Shawn was the first to let out a laugh which rippled through the large collection of gymnasts. When the whole event had finally been sufficiently introduced, all the gymnasts went to their respective spots to prepare for the upcoming events they would be competing in.
Some doing additional stretching while others spoke with friends who they may have not seen in a while. Others spoke to family members and those who had come to cheer them on, or received pep talks from coaches.
Mia smiled and spotted a familiar group of faces in the stands who she motioned to come closer to the floor. She smiled at the group of her coworkers and laughed playfully as she got up into the stands. ”So, what do y’all think so far? I promise that it won’t seem so theatrical from here on in. “
She seemed to be totally in her element here in the stadium. Even though her legs were pretty much bare save for shoes resembling ballet slippers on her feet that she wore only when not on the floor, Mia seemed to feel rather comfortable. She looked over at the set up in the stadium. Section of the floor had been set up for different events, with their respective apparatus. She could tell you what all each event would entail. She smiled at her coworkers and their family, feeling glad to have them out to support her.
