Spencer was SO nervous. Tonight, he was going to propose to Mia. BUT he had done a lot of fancy footwork to make sure that she wouldn't find out. Aimee was a big help in that. But he had everything ready..flowers, the ring, and a box. He had reservations for dinner, and the guy was all set up at the special place. He was ready. Aimee was on hand to help him out-she was going to distract Mia while he got stuff ready. Which she did. He had called her the day before, and gave her his signal-he had already discussed his plans to marry Mia with Aimee, mostly because he had worried that sudden changes would trigger something in Aimee's addictions, and that she would start again. She had been mature about it, though, and had helped him arrange things.
He came home from work-he'd told Mia that morning at breakfast that they were going to dinner-and presented Mia with a bouquet of flowers, then went upstairs to shower and change. Their reseverations were for 6:30, and he was freaking out. He should've made them for four, because then it would be over now, and he would know. As he combed his hair and put on his suit, he thought about the next few days-if Mia said yes, they would have to call the families. He had tried to do it before, but he hadn't been feeling well lately. Also, he-or they-would have to tell Hotch, and he should probably arrange a trip to Vegas to see his mom. She would be happy. He hoped...
Soon, the family was in the car, dressed in their finest, and making their way to the resturant. The ring was burning a hole in his pocket, but he had a fake smile on. Mia must suspect SOMETHING, but he knew for sure that Aimee hadn't said a word. Aimee had never lied to him before, so he believed her when she told him she wouldn't.
Finally, they arrived, and Spencer opened the door for Mia, and helped her to climb out. He took DJ on his hip, and the four people entered. He smiled at the waiter.
Reid. We have a reservation for 6:30 for four... They were led to their seat. It was almost time...

Mia had the sense that something was up for a while now. Of course, knowing Aimee, that could be a number of things. She was out of school for the summer. So, there was the potential for her to get up to a LOT of trouble. Of course, Spencer had been acting a tad differently lately as well. But, she just wrote that off due to the migraines and the medication. God only knew how many times she’d prayed by now that they’d find out what was causing those darn things. Mia hated seeing her boyfriend in such pain.
Luckily, today seemed to be a good day. As far as Mia knew, Spencer hadn’t had a migraine today. In fact, he’d told her that they were going to dinner tonight during breakfast that morning. It had made her smile the whole day at work. Well, most of the day, there were some things that she saw at work which one shouldn’t smile at when viewing. But, when she had gotten home, Aimee and DJ were waiting excitedly to greet her. The teenager seemed to have been waiting to start “helping” her pick out what she was wearing that night. Mia was pretty sure that Aimee had spent the day planning out what she was going to wear, though. She was just being polite.
So, Mia had let Aimee assist her with “picking out” the already predetermined outfit Aimee had chosen. Then, it had been a shower and doing her hair. Mia had even had time to do her nails, and Aimee had been amazed that the blonde had skills with nail art. After doing her nails, Mia did DJ’s fingernails is a nice pale shade of pink. She knew that Spencer only allowed her to do DJ’s nails in one shade at a time, and a soft color. Which was alright with Mia, seeing as how she only owned soft and pale shades of nail polish.
When Spencer came home, he’d presented her with a bouquet of flowers, which made her smile. Aimee had started humming something and DJ seemed very pleased. It seemed to be almost surreal as Aimee helped do her make up. Then, they helped get DJ all ready to go, taking turns to get dressed. It was a short time till the whole family was in the car. Mia used to feel a bit awkward about using that word in regards to Aimee, DJ, and Spencer.
It made Mia smile as she thought about it. Of course, she couldn’t shake the sense that something was up. Spencer was wearing his fake smile. She knew that smile, but she decided not to say anything. She figured he had his reasons. She trusted Spencer.
They got to the restaurant and Spencer opened the car door for her. He held DJ on his hip as they walked into the establishment and Spence spoke to the waiter. Reid. We have a reservation for 6:30 for four... The waiter guided them to their table, and DJ smiled happily and looked at the colorful menu.
Mia looked over the menu, and made a decision to try the chicken. Then, she made another bold choice, which was to try something new. So, when the waiter came around and asked what everyone would like, the blonde told the man her order. ”I would like the double breast of chicken with the asparagus, And could I have a glass of white Zinfandel, please? Thank you very much.”
As the waiter walked away after taking their orders, Mia could see at least Aimee looking a little surprised at her drink order. ”I drink wine, rarely. It is just that I am kind of picky. Most wines smell.. unappetizing to me.” In fact, most kinds of alcohol smelled funny to Mia. Which she didn’t mind one bit.

Spencer glanced around the table. He hoped that there would be many more nights of this-the three women he loved sitting around a table, harassing each other. He smiled, and took Mia's hand, and helped DJ to get out one of her coloring books and crayons from her "purse"-an old tote bag of Aimee's. The toddler set about drawing things, and coloring carefully, not making too much sense about where she put the colors.
He glanced at the menu, and decided he would have a steak with steamed asparagus and some roasted potatoes. He would get DJ the pasta-he knew she would eat that without too much problems. He put the menu aside, and listened to the chatter. The ladies looked lovely, and he interrupted to say so.
Mia, dear. You look GOREGOUS today. Were you wearing makeup at work?! And Aimee, you look so grown up... Aimee gave him a LOOK when he asked Mia his question, and he blushed. Guess not...but the point still stood.
Ok, ladies. Now that we are out for dinner, I wanted to say thanks for all your hard work during the move. Our new house is gorgeous, and you ladies are the ones to thank for that. And I know I haven't been much help...I hope they can get the headaches under control soon. He sighed. OH boy, DID he...
The waiter turned up then to take their order, and he raised an eyebrow at Mia's. I would like the double breast of chicken with the asparagus, And could I have a glass of white Zinfandel, please? Thank you very much. He smiled. I drink wine, rarely. It is just that I am kind of picky. Most wines smell.. unappetizing to me. He nodded.
Yes. It is the tannins. That is what gives it that scent...it's a part of the aging process. Some of the oak from the barrels seeps into the liquid... He trailed off. No one cared. I will have the steak and grilled mushrooms, and potatoes. A glass of Merlot for me, and some water. DJ here will have a small plate of pasta, no sauce, just butter and cheese. She has a juice box, so water for her, also. He smiled at Mia. Aimee ordered as well, a Diet Coke to go with her meal, and he smiled at HER. He knew she was on her best behavior, and he appreciated it.
So if you ladies are game, I thought we could take a walk...this part of downtown is goregous in the evenings. It wouldn't be too long since there is a little monkey that needs to go to bed, but at least we can see some of the sites. He raised an eyebrow questioningly.
Aimee was on summer break, and she was feeling just a TINY bit restless. Spencer had "hired" her for the summer to watch DJ and take her places, and he paid her for that, which was nice. Sometimes she babysat DJ and James at the same time, or DJ and Henry. But that day she was just watching DJ, and the two had PLANS. Spencer had told her the night before, while Mia put DJ to bed, that today was "the Day." By this, she knew that he meant it was the day that he would propose to his girlfriend. She knew this because they had discussed it already.
Aimee's job was to keep Mia distracted while Spencer made the final plans. Which she could TOTALLY do. Aimee was a master at the art of distraction, even if it meant flashing someone. It was all in the name of love, and love was something that was important to Aimee. So, Aimee spent the day going through Mia's closet, and Spence's too, already selecting outfits. Then she and DJ had a fashion show before lunch, going through all of THEIR clothes and trying on outfits. Finally, Aimee selected one for each of them, and then they ate their lunch. DJ took her nap, and Aimee got some time to think. Most people wouldn't know that Aimee did a lot of thinking, but the truth was that Aimee was a lot like Spencer-her mind was ALWAYS at work, and she was sensitive. She decided that she was truly happy for her brother, and that she would help him to make today special. She called her boyfriend, and they chatted for awhile until Mia came home. About that time, DJ woke up from her nap, and the girls started primping.
They all trooped upstairs, and Aimee "picked out" an outfit for Mia, and hung up Spencer's in the master bathroom. Aimee helped her with her makeup, and Aimee was impressed that Mia could do her own nails and nail art. Then, the teenager got herself ready as she heard her brother come home. Finally, after dressing DJ, and getting the changing bag packed and having a small snack, the family piled into the car, and headed for the restruant.
They settled in at a table, and Aimee made sure that DJ was set up, with something to keep her occupied. They chatted back and forth for a bit, before the waiter showed up to take their orders. Mia suprised her again by having a glass of wine with her dinner. Square, straight Mia had a bit of a triangle side...NICE.
I would like the double breast of chicken with the asparagus, And could I have a glass of white Zinfandel, please? Thank you very much... I drink wine, rarely. It is just that I am kind of picky. Most wines smell.. unappetizing to me. She was about to speak when Spencer interrupted.
Yes. It is the tannins. That is what gives it that scent...it's a part of the aging process. Some of the oak from the barrels seeps into the liquid... Aimee felt her eyes glaze over, but she nodded at him. OK, Spence...that is good to know. I will have the grille salmon, the asparagus, and some potatoes. A diet Coke for me, please. She sighed, and shut her menu. She wanted to eat a LOT more, but she was trying to watch her weight again. She needed to get back into sports.
Spencer spoke again, and Aimee had to clamp her mouth shut to avoid yelling "JESUS CHRIST" loudly.
Mia, dear. You look GOREGOUS today. Were you wearing makeup at work?! And Aimee, you look so grown up... REALLY?! HE just said that?! She gave him a LOOK and kicked him under the table. But he went on, realizing that he messed up because he turned red. She would explain it to him later.
So if you ladies are game, I thought we could take a walk...this part of downtown is goregous in the evenings. It wouldn't be too long since there is a little monkey that needs to go to bed, but at least we can see some of the sites... Aimee grinned. She knew what that was about. She nodded enthusastically.
YES! That sounds like fun. We could get some frozen yogurt at that place near the National Mall and then go sit in the park by the Washington Monument to eat it... Sounded like a plan to her....

Mia was enjoying having a family dinner out. She thought that DJ looked adorable and Aimee looked very mature and elegant. Spencer looked very, very handsome in his suit and tie. The blonde smiled as she watched DJ color and draw in her coloring book. She thought about how her daughter was using bright colors more than darker colors. As she thought, she caught herself referring to DJ as Her daughter again in her mind. It had been happening more and more lately. Originally, it had made her stop and remind herself that she was not the girl’s mother. But, now Mia had just taken the maternal role and didn’t give any regard to the lack of biological or legal relationship to the toddler. After all, her own mama had adopted her and loved her as though she was her own biological daughter.
Mia saw that Aimee was a bit surprised when she ordered a glass of wine, but the smile on Aimee’s face made her smile in return. Of course, then Spencer had to jump in with his knowledge of wine. Yes. It is the tannins. That is what gives it that scent...it's a part of the aging process. Some of the oak from the barrels seeps into the liquid...
Aimee obviously could care less about what made wine smell the way it did, though. OK, Spence...that is good to know. Mia just laughed a tiny bit and shook her head. ”And I only knew that tannins were used in turning hides into leather. “
She tried to ignore the thought that the same sort of thing used to make leather was in wine too. Mia watched as Aimee seemed to just roll her eyes and start to zone out while Spencer tried to explain tannins. Then, Spencer said something that made the blonde how much Spencer REALLY paid attention. Mia, dear. You look GOREGOUS today. Were you wearing makeup at work?! And Aimee, you look so grown up.. Mia knew that Spencer had seen her without make up quite a few times by now. Of course, it could just be that he meant that he thought she looked beautiful either way. So, Mia decided to take the question as a compliment. She smiled and looked at Spencer. ”A lady never tells.”
Mia could tell that Spencer realized that he said something that could be considered rude as his face turned red. And she thought she felt a small breeze, as if someone’s leg moved swiftly under the table. But, that couldn’t be what happened, everyone was being so well behaved. By everyone, Mia meant Aimee. She chose to ignore it. It must have been some kind of draft.
So if you ladies are game, I thought we could take a walk...this part of downtown is gorgeous in the evenings. It wouldn't be too long since there is a little monkey that needs to go to bed, but at least we can see some of the sites.
Mia smiled at the suggestion. She recalled how she had walked a bit after their first date and how beautiful it had been. She had to agree that this part of downtown was gorgeous in the evenings. YES! That sounds like fun. We could get some frozen yogurt at that place near the National Mall and then go sit in the park by the Washington Monument to eat it... DJ’s head shot up from her coloring at Aimee’s mention of getting frozen yogurt. Mia laughed and couldn’t help but grin.
”That sounds like a great idea. A walk sounds lovely; it is really beautiful around her in the evening. Aimee, that’s sounds like a plan. I am in for a walk and some frozen yogurt. What do you think, DJ?” Mia looked at the aforementioned “little monkey”. The toddler grinned widely and was nodding her head. ”Well, I think we all agree then.”

Spencer wanted to fastforward through dinner. He just wanted to ask Mia already, so he could have the answer. But he knew he had to be patient. He listened to Mia and Aimee go back and forth, and Mia replied to him.
And I only knew that tannins were used in turning hides into leather. He nodded. That was correct. HE was also pleased that the women liked the walk-after-dinner plan.

Looks like it. Spencer knew when he was beat. He was just powerless to say no to DJ, Mia, or Aimee. I guess that's what we will do, then. He smiled. Their meals arrived not long after, and the family ate and chatted. Spencer was growing antsy, but he was trying hard not to show it.
Finally, the wine had been drunk, and all the food-except DJ's-had been eaten. The little girl's meal was boxed up, and they were ready to leave. Spencer stood up, and took Mia's hand as they left the building. They stopped at the car, and put DJ's food away, and got her stroller, and then made their way towards the touristy parts of town. He took a deep breath. This was it.

Mia smiled as Spencer took her hand as they left the building. Everyone save for DJ, had finished their dinner, so they went to the car to put the boxed food in and get DJ’s stroller. It was simple enough to get the stroller unfolded and get DJ into it. Convincing DJ that she wanted to stay in the stroller was the interesting part. As they reached the more tourist-y part of town, there were more people, which seemed to convince DJ that she’d rather sit in her stroller.
Aimee had been adamant about wanting to push her niece in the stroller, which Spencer seemed fine with, so Mia was as well. Mia couldn’t help but marvel at how the city looked while the sun set. The gradual change of pinks, purples, reds and oranges seemed to be reflected off the white marble that adorned many of the well known attractions of Washington DC.
Mia walked along next to Spencer, her hand in his as they strolled down the sidewalk, She could tell that he was nervous about something. His palm was sweating, not an absurd amount, but a bit. Aimee was being very well behaved and she was even hanging back. But, maybe they were just having an odd, enjoyable day.
The family got to the frozen yogurt shop, much to DJ and Aimee’s excitement. Everyone placed their order, and got their own froyo. Mia got a chocolate hazelnut yogurt with Nutella, strawberries, and bananas for the toppings. She watched as DJ took a bite of her own yogurt and laughed a bit as she noticed that there was a bit of frozen yogurt on her nose. Mia knelt down and grinned as she smiled at Dj. ”hey sweetie, you’ve got something right.. there. “ She gently wiped the yogurt off her daughter’s nose, which elicited a giggle from both of the females.
It was a short walk from the frozen yogurt shop to the park nearby. The sun had already set when they reached the park, and the lights shone on the Washington memorial as they did on the other DC landmarks at night. It was an absolutely gorgeous night out, and Mia smiled as she took a bite of her yogurt. She thought that there was no way this could be any more perfect.

Spencer felt Mia place her hand in his as the family headed out. He hadn't really considered what he would say exactly, but trusted his mind enough to come up with the right words. He wished he had written them down, though. Because he was nervous. He hoped that it would all go OK-that there would be nothing unforseeable to stand in his way.
They arrived at the yogurt shop, and he let the girls get whatever they wanted-it was a rare treat for them, as he didn't allow a lot of sugar in the house. Mia ordered a Nutella sundae, he got the caramel fudge, Aimee got plain tart, and DJ got chocolate. They started out to the location, but Mia stopped, and laughed. She bent down to talk to DJ, who had gotten ice cream on her nose.
hey sweetie, you’ve got something right.. there. Spencer smiled. Mia was SO good with DJ. He felt even more RIGHT about this. He smiled at Aimee as Mia stood up again. He knew that the Memorial was just up the block, and his eyes adjusted to the rapidly falling darkness. PERFECT.
He led the girls towards a special spot, near the entrance to the Washington Monument. Normally, people weren't allowed there after close, but the gate guard owed him a favor. So Spencer smiled as they approached the man.
Hi, Gil...is it ready? The old Greek man just nodded, and opened the gate. Aimee and DJ had come here early this morning to set up, and Gil had kept a constant watch. He smiled as they approached the steps. For there, lit up with two luminaries, and a heart-shaped wreath surrouned by fairy lights, were two signs. "Will You?" said one, in red paint. "Marry Me?" was written on the second, in the same red paint.
He took a deep breath. He just decided to follow what was in his heart because his stupid brain was failing him for once in his life. He spoke clearly, feeling sure in his emotions. He took DJ on his shoulders, since AImee had taken her out of her stroller. Aimee sat nearby, a smile on her face, eating her yogurt. He placed his yogurt carefully on the stroller seat, and bent down on one knee. He took Mia's hand in his, and pulled the ring out of his pocket, in its blue box. HE kept his other hand on DJ, making sure she didn't fall. He could hear her giggles, though.
Mia. I know we haven't known each other for too long, but...I would be the happiest man in the world if you said that you would marry me. He grinned stupidly. This ring was my mother's. You can wear it, and we will have it resized, or you can just wear it until we get one of your own. He could hear Aimee sigh, but he went on. So what I am asking is...will you marry me? He felt a bit dizzy as he waited for her answer...

Mia smiled as Spencer led them towards the gate to the Washington Monument. She knew that it was closed, but it seemed that Spencer knew the guard at the gate. Hi, Gil...is it ready? The man at the gate simply nodded and opened the gate for them. Aimee seemed to be very focused on her yogurt, which Mia would normally would find odd. But, she was too busy being completely pleased with the moment.
Then, they reached the steps up to the memorial and Mia nearly did a double take. She wanted to look around, see what other couple was there and going to probably get engaged. But, she knew that they were the only ones there. There was a heart shaped wreath with fairy lights, and two luminaries. But, it was what they were lighting up that made her want to look around. There were two signs that wew illuminated by the lights. Both of them were done in the same red paint, one read “Will you?” and the other had “Marry me?”.
It seemed to be almost surreal. Spencer took DJ and got her up on his shoulders before getting down on one knee and taking her hand in his. He had a blue box in his hand, and then he opened it. Inside the blue box, was a ring. Mia somehow managed to put her yogurt on the stroller seat and not just drop it when she started to tear up. She could see and hear DJ giggling on Spencer’s shoulders as she started to cry.
Mia. I know we haven't known each other for too long, but...I would be the happiest man in the world if you said that you would marry me. This ring was my mother's. You can wear it, and we will have it resized, or you can just wear it until we get one of your own. So what I am asking is...will you marry me?
It was a small miracle that Mia managed to get herself to stop crying. She wiped her eyes and smiled. ”Yes. Yes, I’d be honored to wear your mother’s ring. Yes, just.. Yes.” She nodded as she spoke and couldn’t help but give Spencer a kiss. When she pulled away from him, she couldn’t help but beam. ”I’ll marry you both. And Aimee too.” She looked at Dj and smiled, giving her a light kiss on the nose.
Aimee was kind of nervous herself. She hoped that Spencer wasn't making a huge mistake. She ate her dinner, and made good, mature conversation with adults. She also played with DJ, keeping the toddler out of her brother's hair. WHY he thought bringing THEM along was a good idea was beyond Aimee. But she knew he wanted to share it, and she guessed she was happy for him. A small part of her didn't think ANY woman was good enough to be his wife, and DJ's mom, but then that was only a natural reaction for a sister.
Finally, the dinner was over, and they could get to the good stuff. She helped DJ to stay in her stroller, even though Dj kept asking to walk. Finally, they were at the yogurt shop, and Aimee got a plain because she'd already eaten enough junk today. Then, they went on to the park, and Aimee had to stuff yogurt into DJ's mouth to keep her from revealing that they'd been there that morning. She smiled...the park was GORGEOUS lit up, and she felt like she'd done a good job setting up. Spencer had made the signs, but she'd arranged them tres artfully.
Spencer got on one knee, as she'd instructed, and spoke. His words were true, and she felt proud that he hadn't rambled...until he started talking about the ring. SHUT UP, SPENCER. She tried to make him "hear" her through her thoughts. Finally, Mia said yes. Aimee smiled again, and jumped up.
YUSSS! Come on, DJ. Let's go finish our yogurt, and let Dad and Mia have a few minutes alone... She carried the baby away, towards the tree where she had been sitting. SHe tried hard not to tell DJ that soon she might have a little sister of her own.
But if you're so smart/tell me why are you/still so afraid?-Billy Joel "Vienna"

Spencer smiled. He was pretty SURE that Mia had said yes. He reviewed her words in his head.
Yes. Yes, I’d be honored to wear your mother’s ring. Yes, just.. Yes. I’ll marry you both. And Aimee too. YES! She had. He smiled, and whooped a little. He hugged Mia as he let DJ down carefully. Aimee whisked DJ away for a bit, and without a word, he pulled Mia close to him, and kissed her on her mouth-a REAL kiss. He tried to imbue all of his love and passion into that kiss. He broke it off, reluctantly. He knew they had to go home.
Love...I hate to say it, but it's time to take DJ home... He was too happy to care about anything else in that moment...
