Spencer's heart ached for his fiancee, and he could hear his father murmuring something. Signe whispered to him, reminding him not to make a scene, and he nodded, and whispered back.
"I promise. I'm so sorry, honey." Then he turned to his parents, and William spoke.
I am so sorry, my dear. Please, don't let me keep you two from discussing this.
Spencer shook his head.
"It's Ok. We came to see Mom, and we can do that. I have an idea, how about we all go down to the cafeteria and have some lunch?"
Signe smiled and nodded helping to make the idea sell. She needed to distract herself from this. She wasn't ready for her parents to get a divorce. They all stood up and began making there way out of the room. Signe shot Derek a quick text letting him know what was going on. As they walked down the hallway she was buzzed with a text from Derek saying he had it all covered. She would call her dad later and let him know that both the cars were at the house if he needed them.
As they walked down the hall things began to seem so unreal. This was something she never expected to happen. Not to her, not to her family. She started wondering if this was some sort of plan they had been thinking about. She wondered if her siblings knew about it. She decided to forget about it and tried to change the subject. "So Diana...Do you like the food here?"

Spencer watched his fiancee, and smiled lightly; she was dealing well. He trailed behind the group, thinking about the past hour and his father, and hoping that he could be a better father to his daughter than his father was to him. And also that maybe his father wasn't so bad.
Signe spoke then to his mother, asking an inane question about the food. Luckily, his mother was seemingly perkier than the hour before, and handled it with grace.
No, dear, but I deal well with it. Have you found yourself with odd cravings yet? When I was pregnant, I always wanted ramen noodles.
Spencer chuckled, but his father nodded.
It's true. She beg me in the middle of the night, claiming it was all for Spence, and of course, how could I say no? So I would make us a big pot of top Ramen and we'd eat it and watch infomercials on TV.
Spencer smiled, and took Signe's hand as they entered the lunch room and settled in at a table. Spencer spoke.
"I'm going to grab the menu. Sorry, Sig, it's pretty limited."
Signe smiled as Diana and William shared stories about when she was pregnant with Spencer. She liked hearing about him...All they were missing was the baby photos of him taking a bath or something embarrassing.
When he said he was going to get some menus and said something about them not having much of a selection she shook her head. "No worries Spencer...If you remember anything about the FBI Academy you will know that after going through that place you know the true meaning of not much of a selection." She smiled as Spencer went off to get some menus.
"So Diana, were you born here or did you grow up somewhere else?" She asked attempting to get to know more about this woman she would soon be calling her mother in law. So far she liked her very much.

Diana looked around the room, and noticed that people were staring...her son usually did that, his height and good looks usually garnered stares. But she leaned in and whispered loudly to William.
I think people are staring.
William chuckled lightly.
I know, dear, but they're looking at Spencer and Signe, sharing in their happiness
Spencer returned then, in time to hear Signe ask his mother about her childhood before he could stop her....it was kind of a tragic story, and he wanted the rest of the afternoon to be happy. But he settled in next to Signe to listen.
Diana paused, and glanced at Spencer, who nodded once.
No, I was born in Berkeley, California. My parents were hippies, before hippies existed, and we lived in a commune. Then we moved to Arizona and New Mexico, following our commune and some of these alternative healers. It was kind of a religious group, I suppose. Anyway, my parents divorced a few years later, and my father died not too long after that. But my mother sent me to live with my grandmother, and then she committed suicide. I lived with my grandmother for many years, and my life became normal until I turned 16, then I started having...issues with the-well, the stupid doctors call it paranoia. I was able to function pretty well, though, and I graduated high school in Berkeley, and then went on to college at San Francisco State-that's where I met William. He was a young pre-law student, and I thought he looked like Bob Dylan.
Spencer turned a little red at the idea of his parent's courtship-of course, he was old enough and mature enough to understand the mechanics of where he came from, but the idea of it still embarassed him. He was only beginning to discover for himself the joys of intimacy, after all.
Signe nodded when she heard his mother's story. She really did have an interesting past. She looked down at the table as she thought about what to say. And she thought that she had a weird family.
"Wow Diana...What a crazy life." She looked at Spencer and then down at the menu. She looked over what they had and then settled on a salad. It seemed to be the healthiest and the best choice in her current situation. "Spence...I think I am gonna go with a ceaser salad and a glass of water." She smiled as she took his hand and placed her free on hand on her stomach.

Crazy? Spencer shook his head a little; his mother was sensitive to the word.
"She meant crazy as in chaotic, Mom. The Ceaser, dear? Mom, for you? Dad?" He looked around the table to each in turn.
I understand, Spence. I want a sandwich-turkey, please. They know how I like it. Thank you, dear, for going after food. Now, Signe, tell me more. The wedding-what are your plans?
Nothing for me, Spencer. Thank you; I will need to be going soon. I have an appointment.[/orange]
Signe felt awful when Diana brought attention to the word crazy. She really hadn't meant to be rude or insensitive about the word. When Spencer was quick to protect her from his mother and she told him she knew what Signe had meant she calmed down.
Spencer left for the food and left Signe with his parents. Diana was interested in the wedding plans. Signe was wanting a summer wedding, something on the beach. She actually wanted to fly to Hawaii and get married on the beach but her and Spencer hadn't really talked about it much. She also knew that by then DJ would be born and she would be able to fit into her dream dress. But her parents were the type of people who wanted there kids to be married before they had children.
"We haven't really talked about it much but what I really want is a summer wedding in Hawaii. We could plan for next summer. DJ will be born already but that's not something I am to worried about." She said wearing a smile. She wasn't much of a wedding planner.

Spencer stood in line, placing the food items on a large tray, and selecting an anemic-looking hamburger for himself. He returned to the table in time to hear Signe talk about a wedding, which he assumed to be theirs. He spoke.
"No, we haven't discussed it. I was thinking, actually, if you're game, Sig, that we can get married here one weekend, so Mom can be there, at the courthouse, and then we'll have the big white wedding after the baby comes...we can do Hawaii if your heart is set on it."
William nodded.
That sounds like a plan, actually, you two. Please, keep me posted on the events, I will be there.
Spencer fought the urge to grimace for Signe's sake, and instead nodded.
Signe wasn't to excited about the idea of a courthouse wedding. She wanted it all to be planned out and perfect. She didn't want to just get married in a courthouse. The wedding was to important to her. She simply smiled. "Well we will talk about it...Like I said we haven't really gotten a chance to talk about it."
When Spencer's father spoke about wanting to know what was going on she smiled and nodded. She knew that Spencer was having issues being nice to his dad. "We would love to have you. It'll be important to have both of you around while DJ grows up. I want her to have a loving family."

Spencer snorted lightly, but then shook his head.
"Sorry. I just-had to sneeze." That was a lie-they all knew he was fighting to be nice to his father, and in fact, if he had any say, William would have nothing to do with anyone but the child. He wasn't bitter enough to deny his child of a grandfather, but Spencer didn't want the man in HIS life. He spoke to Signe.
"I know, dear, it was just an idea. We'll talk about it tonight." He turned back to his mother.
Signe looked at Spencer when he snorted at her comment about his father being in his life. She didn't think that he needed to do that. He was actually being rather rude but she wouldn't say anything. There were things that had happened that she didn't know about and she didn't feel like making a scene.
She ate her salad and looked at Diana when Spencer asked what she had been up to these days. DJ kicked slightly and Signe looked down at her stomach. She wasn't quite used to the kicking yet and so whenever it happened she was always surprised.

I just sit around here most days. Thanks for sending along that poem anthology; I really enjoyed that. They have me doing rec therapy these days-working the conflicts in my head out through art. It's mostly bullshit, but some of it is OK. They do a lot of painting, but of course, I prefer the writing.
Spencer grinned when Signe looked at her stomach; it was funny that she did that every time the baby kicked.
William spoke then.
Signe, my dear, it was so nice to meet you. Please, Spencer, Signe, Diana. Excuse me, I have an appointment this afternoon. Spencer, son, I'll email you my information, OK?"
Spencer nodded.
"Ok...Dad. Thanks." Spencer handed him his card, with his updated cell phone info, as Garcia was forever purchasing the latest and greatest gadgets and then waved.
Signe smiled when his mother talked about what she did during the day. She would probably flip out if someone told her she wasn't going to be able to do much and just had to sit around for the rest of her life. The woman was pleasant though. She liked that about Diana.
When William stood up and said that it was a pleasure to meet her and shook her hand she smiled. He then asked Spencer to be sure to let him know what was going on. Spencer handed him his card which had his number on it as well as there new home phone. They had a phone number. She remembered when they recorded the message together. They spent an hour trying to figure out what to say and then not liking how it sounded. It was quite the adventure.

Spencer turned to Diana and spoke again.
"You're welcome, Mom. So I talked to Dr. Foster last week, and he said that you were feeling ill. Was that from the new medicines, or did you just eat something off?" Diana waved her hand, shushing him.
Be quiet, Spence. Let Signe and I have some girl talk, OK? Signe, dear, please tell me about you some more. Where did you go to school? What is the hot gossip?
