Spencer glanced at the clock; he had just ten minutes before Signe arrived for their date. He finished running the vacuum over the carpet one more time, and then placed the machine in the hall closet.
He moved on to his bedroom; he'd changed the sheets that morning, and now, he changed his shirt and double-checked that he didn't smell. He was fine, so he hurried into the kitchen.
He opened the oven and noticed that the roast was done-perfect. He stirred the potatoes, and made sure the salad wasn't wilted. He was cooking for her tonight, and he wanted it to be perfect. He had chilled a Chardonnay when he'd arrived home, and now he located the fine crystal his mom had "donated" to him.
He crossed over to the CD player and selected some sexy jazz-Coltrane would be perfect. He moved to the table; he'd borrowed some nice linens from JJ, and bought some flowers. He made sure everything was in order, and then he opened the wine, and placed it on the table.
Just as he was wiping the counters in the kitchen one more time, there came a knock at the door. They hadn't yet exchanged keys, but he was hoping that was soon. He took a deep breath, and smiled. He was ready.
Signe smiled as she finished pinning up the last curl up. She looked in the mirror to make sure everything was all in place the way it should be...It was. She kissed the air to make sure her lip gloss was all good and left the bathroom. She walked into the living room and looked at her dog who was laying on the couch, wagging his tail. He wanted to go. She smiled and shook her head. "Not this time Phoenix. You need to stay home and watch the house." The dogs head fell. He wasn't happy with the decision. She walked over to the table by the door and grabbed her set of keys along with one small key. She was planning on giving him a copy of her house key so he could get into her house if he ever needed to. She smiled and walked out her house, locking it before heading to her car.
She drove down the street with a smile on her face. She was so happy to be spending some time with Spencer that didn't require her and him to not display there affection. So far she had made some amazing progress with her. They were able to cuddle, make out, all the stuff that couples did. She had even fallen asleep on the couch one nigh watching a movie with him. She thought that was good even though she woke up screaming because of nightmares she had but she thought it was better than nothing. She listened to the music coming from her car stereo. Spencer had made her a mix of all the music he listened to, mostly classical. She liked it but she missed music that had lyrics. She listened to it though...She knew it made him happy. She pulled into the parking lot of his apartment building and turned off her car. She sat there for a little bit. She felt ready, she felt ready for the next step. She felt like she could take it but what if she was wrong? What then? Would Spencer not want to be with her anymore? Would she scare him? She really felt like he was the one, she just hoped that he felt the same way.
She got out of her car and walked up the stairs of the building and to his apartment. She knocked on the door and stood there for only a few seconds. Spencer greeted her at the door and she smiled. She gave him a kiss and walked into the apartment. Even with the heels on she wasn't as tall as Spencer. She was rather short, the shortest member on the team. She walked in and looked around. He had really cleaned up the place. Like she had never seen it this clean. The music in the background made her smile. This was something she wasn't expecting. She looked at the table and saw the wine and fine china. She smealt the food and smiled. "So you said that you wanted me to dress nicely...Any reason for the formal dinner?" She asked looking around. She really was hoping something was coming. Not a proposal but maybe an offer to stay the night or something along those lines.

Spencer blushed crimson when Signe kissed him; her touch made his stomach jump and the hairs on his arms stand up. He smiled, though, and kissed her back.
"You look lovely. Let me take your bag." He took her purse, setting it on the table by the front door, and led her to the couch. As they settled in, he replied.
"No particular reason, just that I think that today is our three-month anniversary, and I wanted to make it special. Besides, I did want to give you something." He stood, pulling a shiny metal object from his pocket. It was key to his place, and he handed it to her.
"I think it's time for us to take the next step, so I want you to feel comfortable coming and going from here at any time. You don't have to knock anymore. Um, also, if you're OK with it, maybe you could keep some stuff here and start spending the night a few days a week. I mean, I know that you live close enough you could just go home and change in the morning, but it might make it easier." He stopped speaking before he started to ramble, and smiled.
Signe smiled when he told her it was there three month anniversary...He was keeping tabs. A very good sign. She couldn't believe three months had gone by...She was so amazed at how fast time seemed to go by with him. When he handed her the shiny key and handed it to her. She had gained access into his world without having to ask or knock. Staying the night a few nights a week. That was going to be something new. She nodded when he said she should bring some things over for when she did stay the night.
They sat down and Signe looked around the room. "You know...Pheonix is gonna start getting lonely if I start staying here more than once every few weeks...What are your thoughts on that?" She looked down at the table. He had put a lot of effort into this evening, she could tell. She was looking forward to any other plans he may have had in the evening. "I mean I want to come over as often as possible, we have to take advantage of the time we aren't at work but...Pheonix is like my kid...He needs to have people around or he'll go nuts."

Spencer gulped. He had a deep-seated fear of dogs, all dogs, but he didn't want to admit it. But it was Signe; why was he afraid of telling her. He took a bite of food, and chewed thoughtfully for a moment. Of course, he couldn't ask her to leave the dog behind, but he felt a little silly, a grown man and an FBI agent who lost his cool around dogs. Why couldn't she have a cat? He sighed, then replied.
"I know. I have to tell you something. I am actually really deathly afraid of dogs. I know that Phoenix is your dog, but I am not sure if I could handle being in a small space like this apartment. Not yet, anyway." He felt so bad; sorry to disappoint her, and knowing that he'd wanted the evening to be perfect. He hoped he hadn't spoiled it.
Signe nodded and looked down at her hands. She had a feeling something like this would happen. I mean...She had always had Phoenix outside when people were over and he always tended to bark when he came over. She looked back up at him with a smile. She picked at her salad and smiled once more at Spencer. "That's fine...We can work around it. I got him when I moved here cause I'm terrified of being alone. I needed someone to watch the house and me. Plus my parents wouldn't let me move here unless I got him."
She took a bite of her salad and her eyes went wide. She looked at Spencer and smiled. "Spencer...This salad is amazing! How do you have enough room in that brain of yours to know how to cook so well?" she said taking another bite. "Man my dad's gonna love you...Anyone who can cook is a good man in his book."

Spencer sighed in relief when Signe said they could work around it; he was glad it wouldn't be an issue. He was totally willing to try; maybe he and Signe could take a day and go with the dog to a park or whatever dog people did, and they could get to know each other. He nodded.
"I think I could learn to like Phoenix...I think maybe getting to know him slowly is a good way to do it. I'm glad you're not angry about this." He finished his meat, and watched as Signe took a bite of salad. She looked surprised, and then praised his cooking skills.
"Thank you. I actually don't know how to cook. If I can confess, JJ spent the afternoon on the phone with me, helping me. That's why I left early. Tell me more about your parents, if you feel like it. Maybe we can visit our families at the holidays, assuming this"-he indicated the two of them-"Doesn't get screwed up by me and my childhood aversion to large animals."
Signe giggled when he said he couldn't actually cook but that he spent the whole afternoon on the phone talking to JJ in order to make sure the evening was perfect. No wonder she had spent the afternoon avoiding Signe. It all made perfect sense now. She finished her salad and moved on to the roast. It was amazing...Better than she had ever tasted before. She looked at Spencer and pointed down to the roast with her knife and gave him a thumbs up.
When he mentioned visiting family on holidays and wanting to know more about her family she paused. Summer had arrived which meant the fourth of July was right around the corner. Her mom had heard about the big party that Signe was going to in DC and had nagged her way into getting tickets for her and Signe's dad. They were coming for the fourth anyways seeing as it was her first summer away from home but now they had a "fun" party to go to. "Well Spencer you're in luck. This fourth of July which is oh in a few weeks my parents are coming to visit. They get here the week of the fourth and they are staying for two." She smiled a sarcastic smiled and rolled her eyes.
"My mother is an old fashioned woman who thinks that what we do isn't a science at all and thinks it's the worst profession of all man kind and she thinks that because I was raped I should stay home for the rest of my life as if I can't take care of myself and never move on and fall in love and all that good stuff." She took another bit and started going off again, not letting Spencer speak just yet. "My dad...You'll like. He worked for the FBI as a bomb tech for the longest time...That's how I got interested in the FBI and he thinks what I do is awesome and can't wait to meet you by the way...Well, meet you again. You met them briefly at the hospital if I do recall." She took another bit and looked out the window. "I have two older siblings. A brother who was friends with Derek in high school and is in the army and a sister who is a housewife with four kids." She pause realizing that she had rambled. Possibly for the first time at the level that Spencer did. "Wow...Sorry I was rambling. What about your family?" she said looking at him.

Spencer chuckled, and ate his potatoes as Signe rattled on about her family. He listened intently; he remembered her parents; he'd met them in passing at the hospital, but JJ was the one who had spent the most time with them. He nodded when she praised the roast; pleased he could make her happy.
He put down his fork and listened closely, sipping some wine as she told him details about her parents; that her mother was old-fashioned and didn't believe in the work they did, which he had heard before; even some fellow FBI agents had called it "crack psychology" and made fun of the BAU. But he hoped he could please her mother, just by being himself, and maybe impressing her with his intelligence. And the manners his own mother taught him, of course.
He smiled when she mentioned her father; Spencer had forgotten that the man had been an Agent himself, and he remembered that the older man had worried immensely for his daughter, and was the first family member at the hospital, and stayed by Signe's bedside. Spencer remembered liking that; his own father wasn't exactly winning any father-of-the-year awards.
He enjoyed hearing about her siblings; he didn't have any, but he hoped that they would like him as much as he liked their sister. He smiled upon hearing about her nieces or nephews, and spoke when she finished, asking him about his family.
"Your sisters kids, are they boys or girls? Anyway, my father is William Reid, he's an attorney, and lives in Las Vegas, not too far from where I grew up. I don't see much of him. And uh, my mom, Diana, she's really sick. She has...a mental problem-dissociative personality disorder, and she lives in a mental hospital. I um, I don't see her as much as I'd like, but I do write to her everyday. I wrote to her about you, actually, and she seems excited to meet you." He nodded once, and then sipped his wine, blushing lightly.
From what she could gather Spencer was genuinely excited to meet her family. She wasn't...It would most likely end in fights or something like that. She ate her roast and took a sip of her wine as she listened to him talk about his family. His father was a lawyer in Las Vegas and his mother was a very ill woman. She listened intently showing that she cared about his family. Deep down she hoped she would be able to call them her family one day.
When he mentioned that he wrote to his mother and told her about Signe she smiled. The fact that she was excited to meet her was something Signe wanted to hear. She hoped that his family would like her...That was the important thing. "I'm sorry to hear about your mother...That must be hard for you." She looked around the apartment once more, amazed that he had managed to get the house all cleaned. It was amazing. She knew he was pretty clean in generally and he always had it well kept when she would come over but there was still clutter in places. Most of the time she would just keep it to herself but sometimes she just couldn't take it. Now everything was perfectly in it's place and the clutter was gone.
She took a sip of her wine and heard her phone going off. It was a text message. She stood up and put her pointer finger up requesting a moment. She walked over to her purse and grabbed it from her bag. She looked and sighed in relief when she saw it wasn't Hotch or JJ saying they had a case. It was her mother. Saying that they would be coming in a week to stay...Now they would be there for three weeks, perfect.
She walked back over to the table and sat down as she replied to her mom. She hated when her mother did this but she was a well behaved girl, she would never snap at her mother or tell her no. She looked up at Spencer and held her phone up. "My parents are coming in a week. They'll be here for three weeks." She put her phone down and went back to eating. She couldn't believe her mother sometimes. The best part about her parents coming was her father was going to be here. She had agreed to show him where she worked. He wanted to see how headquarters had changed since he had worked there. She loved spending time with her dad, it was her mother that she couldn't stand.
"With my parents here visiting I'll have to sleep at my house...You could come stay at my place." She said between bites of her food. She looked up at him with a smile she played on her face when she was upset but she wanted to hide it. "We can keep Phoenix away while you are inside." she hoped that he would agree. She didn't know if she was going to be able to handle being alone with her parents. Sure her mom would probably say something about them sleeping together before they got married but she didn't care...She was 28 years old and she was going to do what she was going to do.

Spencer watched as Signe looked around the house...he knew his propensity towards clutter could cause him to gather paperwork, and it drove her crazy. But then, the way she alphabetized *everything* made him nuts...they weren't perfect after all. But he was glad that he'd taken the time to straighten up; he was planning to ask Signe to spend the weekend with him, and he'd wanted to be on her good side.
He grimaced when her phone went off, and hoped it was JJ or Hotch. The look on her face suggested it wasn't, and then she told him it was her mother. He was about to ask her what she wanted when Signe told him. Apparently, her folks were coming a week early. She told him that she would, of course, have to spend the three weeks they were here at her place. Of course she would, and he nodded before responding.
"Of course, sweetheart. And don't worry about Phoenix, I have a plan. Are you just about finished?" He didn't want to rush her, but every time she smiled, he felt himself wanting to kiss her. He continued.
Signe smiled when he said that he had a plan for the dog. She thought that Phoenix could really come to like Reid. He was just a threat. A man coming into Signe's life and Phoenix was her protector. People could disagree all they wanted but she had a feeling that he knew what happened to her. He knew what she went through and was going to protect her at all costs. He didn't even like Derek all that much. He would bark and growl until Signe put him outside. They were coming around but Phoenix still wasn't quite sure.
He asked if she was finished and she said yes, allowing him to take her plate to the kitchen. She stood up and took her heels off, dropping her back down to her small height of 5'7. She would now be a whole 5 inches shorter than her boyfriend, great. When he asked if she wanted to stay the night she turned around, looked at him and smiled. She would want nothing more than to stay the night. She was actually hoping he would ask her to. She walked over to him and hugged him, smelling how great he smelt. She pulled away and kissed his nose before walking over to her purse. "I have something for you." She said as she pulled the key out and hid it in her hand. She walked over to him, took his hand and placed the key inside it. "Now you can come in whenever you want. I can keep Phoenix outside when I leave for work since the summer weather isn't that bad."

Spencer smiled, and kissed her head.
"Thank you. I think that would be so great. I am glad we're doing this. And, I'm especially glad you want to stay here with me. Should we watch a movie?"
Signe smiled when he voiced how happy he was that they were doing this. She nodded and smiled when he asked if they wanted to watch a movie. They did that a lot when she came over. She liked watching movies. She did that all the time, at home she would sit with her dog and watch movies and now she was doing just that with Spencer. She walked over to the couch and sat down. She watched him walk over to the collection of movies he had and tilted her head. "Please do not make me watch another episode of Star Trek." She said with a slight chuckle. She loved him dearly but to much Star Trek could be a bad thing.

Spencer turned around, a pretend-hurt look on his face when she joked about Star Trek.
"I'll have you know that those are classics. Fine, no Star Trek. Let's see..." He ran his fingers over the movies he had, until his eyes lit upon something. He'd forgotten that JJ had left a movie at his place once, a long time ago. He pulled it out, and handed it to Signe.
"How about "Sleepless in Seattle?" It's actually JJ's; she came over once a long time ago, and we hung out and watched movies. Said I had to see this one, that would help with the ladies. I guess she was on to something. I should probably return it." He shrugged at her.
